The Best Camper Vans In 2022 (1)

What Is a Camper Van?

A camper van, also called a Class B RV, is a small motorhome built on a van chassis. These rigs are perfect getaway vehicles for solo travelers or couples who appreciate the agility and convenience of a small camper.

Don’t let the word “van” confuse you, though. We’re not talking about a minivan with a mattress thrown in the back. Today’s camper vans offer residential-style luxury like never before. You can expect to find high-tech features, comfortable sleeping areas, functional kitchens and bathrooms, and plenty of storage space.

How Much Does a Camper Van Cost?

We’ll cut to the chase — new camper vans are expensive. Smaller units without bathrooms, like the 2022 Pleasure-Way Tofino, start around $85,000. If you’re looking for something a little larger with full amenities, you can pay anywhere from $120,000 to $235,000.

While this pricing may seem high, remember you’re getting an all-in-one home on wheels. If you were buying a separate RV trailer and tow vehicle, you might pay just as much for the two.

There’s one other campervan sold in the UK with the full backing of its base vehicle manufacturer – the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo .. This is based on the Volkswagen Crafter, itself a brilliant large panel van, and takes everything we enjoy about the regular California and scales it up.. Driving a camper means you'll never have to pitch a tent or look for a hotel room ever again. We've put together a list of the best ones available in 2020.

Our list includes purpose-built off-roaders with correspondingly high prices, budget-friendly used models you can turn into your base camp in your spare time, and a lot of options in between.. Starting with a homely Sprinter, the same kind of van that delivers your FedEx packages, Midwest Automotive builds a camper van you wouldn’t trade for a night at the Hilton.. It kept the stock 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine and the four-wheel drive system, and it turned the cargo compartment into a home away from home with a bed, freshwater tank, closet, fridge, pantry, and fold-down exterior table.. If you don’t want to spend money on a new van, Sportsmobile will convert any E-Series into a 4×4 camper.. Colorado-based EarthRoamer started with the Blue Oval’s biggest truck to build a rugged four-wheel drive camper called XV-HD.. Some were passenger-carrying models with three rows of seats, while others were fitted with the desirable Westphalia option and factory-built for camping with a sink, a small kitchen, and convenient cupboards.. Volkswagen sold EuroVan models between 1999 and 2003 model years.. You can use the cargo compartment to build a walk-in van — Nissan claims even 6-foot-3-inch adventurers can stand up straight — or you can install a mezzanine bed.. Our recommendations span everything from high-priced luxury models to more affordable camping models with basic features.. While they don’t have the same interior luxuries as larger motorhomes, they’re easier to drive so you’re more likely to take them out for trips both long and short, so you’ll be getting your money’s worth from this vehicle.

The vehicle only sleeps three people , but it’s one of the best Class B RV choices for those looking to start the van life.. Don’t expect much from the Winnebago Solis warranty, as it only offers 1-year/15,000-mile protection .. Class B RVs have an average cost of $75,000–$200,000 .

Best Camper Van Reviews. Winnebago Solis, Solis Pocket, Thor Tellaro, and the PleasureWay Tofino all with Pop-Top lofts. See our reviews with pictures, data, and links.

Motor Trend magazine reviewed the new Solis Camper Vans Reviews in this article: Winnebago Solis & Solis PX , Solis Pocket , PleasureWay Tofino , and Thor Tollaro. Apparently Winnebago was listening because a short while later they came out with the Winnebago Solis, a pop-top full featured camper built on the medium-sized Ram ProMaster Chassis.. The Solis offers as standard equipment a 220 watt solar panel, AGM Batteries, the Truma-Combi hot water/heater system, a 2800 watt Onan generator, and a high efficiency Coleman NDQ air conditioner.. The extra length of the Solis 59PX allows an additional storage area for gear or clothes. Not only does it offer extra room for bikes, golf bags, and other gear, the garage or gear storage area also has an L-track tie-down and hanger system that would allow the space to function as a hanging clothes closet.. In a unit the same length as the Travato 59G which we had nominated as our Best Compact Class B Motorhome, the Solis 59PX manages to offer substantially more storage space and a larger, more convenient to access double bed.. The pop-top bed area is smaller than the Solis or the Tollaro and is best suited for kids or one adult.. Advantage over the Solis: a larger dinette table, a slightly larger refrigerator, and a power awning.. Solis advantage over the Tellaro: a much larger gear and storage area that also has potential to hang a good deal more clothing.. The Tellaro’s quoted MSRP is less than the Solis but the Pop-Top is an optional feature and I don’t know how much that adds to the cost.. For me that huge garage/gear/clothes hanging rear area in the Solis is worth the sacrifice of a larger table and an awing that I’d likely never use.
